Seafood abounds in Hamburg, as you’d expect in a port city. The most interesting part of town from a culinary standpoint is Sternschanze, where Turkish fruit and falafel stands and avant-garde cafes entice hungry passersby with good food and great atmosphere. Schulterblatt, SusannenstraBe, and SchanzenstraBe have funky cafes and restaurants, while slightly cheaper establishments abound in the university area, especially along RentzelstraBe, Grindelhof, and Grindelallee. In Altona, the pedestrian zone leading up to the train station is packed with ethnic food stands and produce shops. The Portuguese community lends its own take on seafood in the area between the Michaelskirche and the river. 13 La Sepia, Schulterblatt 36, is a fine Portuguese restaurant with the city’s best and most reasonably priced seafood. Lunch 4-6. Dinner 8-14. Open daily llam-3am.

Old Commercial Room, Englische Planke 10. Hamburg-style bacon pancakes with wild cranberries (11) or lightly salted pork and vegetables (14.50) right across from St. Michaelskirche. Open daily lOam-midnight.

Afghanische Spezialitat, on the corner of Steindamm and Polverteich. Simple Afghan grill and goods shop serves kebabs and rice dishes. Open daily 9am-9pm.

Cafe Gnosa, Lange Reihe 93. A social focal point for the gay community of St. Georg, Gnosa serves up drinks and dainties to 20-somethings of mixed orientation. Drinks 2-5. Pick up free gay magazine hinnerk. Open Su-Th lOam-lam, F-Sa 10am-2am.
