Not a discount store per se, but one of the best mystery book stores around. Now, as you may know, mystery fans go through novels the way Sy Sperling goes through hairpieces. That means they have a lot of useless books on their hands. And they bring ’em into Kate’s by the boxful.

If you’re a part of this food chain, Kate’s is the place for you. Bring in your old mysteries (hardcover or paperback) for credit toward other new or used books. And if you’re just looking to buy, check out the several shelves of used paperbacks, mostly priced from $1 to $3. Used hardcovers are mixed in with the new ones, so they take a bit more sleuthing.

Whodunit fans go through books so quickly, in fact, that you can often find current bestsellers only a few months after their publication. And mysteries apparently age like wines a recent used title may actually cost less than an older one. Great way to support your habit and save! Open weekdays from 12-7 p.m. (an hour later on Thursdays), Saturdays 11-5, Sundays 12-5.

Magazines by Joseph

• 279 Newbury St. Boston; no phone Up on the second floor, overlooking posh Newbury Street, this tiny store is crammed with hundreds and hundreds of used magazines. The collection is eclectic, to say the least a milk crate filled with Ms. magazines sits next to one stocked with old Victoria’s Secret catalogs. Hmmm. Whatever your passion or pleasure, you’ll find back issues of all your favorites.

The bestsellers of the biz, like Esquire, Life, Playboy, and National Geographic, are plentiful. But you’ll also find lesser-knowns like The Progressive. The prices are unbeatable. Expect to pay 35? to 501 for mass markets like Glamour and Vanity Fair, a dollar or two for high-brows like Architectural Digest and the Utne Reader. While away an hour tracking down out-of-prints like Lear’s and rare back issues. Open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 PM.
