Dervent Monastery

According to the archaeological descoveries, the Dervent Monastery is the oldiest monastic site in our country. It seems it was erected during the roman colonization, in the south of Scita Minor, between Tomis (nowaday the Constanta city) and Durostorum (nowaday the Silistra city). The first certain informations about the establishement of a reclusory dates from the 9th century.

Darvari Monastery

Darvari monastery was founded in 1834 by Mihail Darvar. as an wooden churh without any cupola and it was consacrated to the St Lazar Resurrection and to the St Emperors Constantine and Helena. At first it was a nunnery, closed in 1865 and reopened after 1989. The museum of the monastery houses the first printing press in Bucharest.

Plumbuita Monastery

The halidom was founded by Petru Voivode ini 564. In 1573 in this place was created the first printing press in Bucharest.

Manastirea Cernica

It was documentary registered in 1608, when the vomic Cemica restored and gave his name to an old hermitage. The monastery is built upon an isle siuated in the middle of a lake bounded by forest. Dealul Monastery

It was erected in 1841. From 16th century it turns into princely necropolis and here rests from 1606 the head of the ruler Mihai the Brave. The romanian historian Nicolae Iorga in 19th century considered it as “a miracle of oriental art”. At Dealu also lived Macarie, a monk who remained into collectve counsciousness as representative for morality and for his monastic dedication.

Nucet Monastery

The name of the monastery come from “place with walnuts”. The halidom, located into the middle of walnut orchard, is was been the only initiall prayer habitat south to Targoviste. In 1592 the building was dedicated to a monastery under the jurisdiction of Ecumenic Patriarchate.

Polovragi Monastery

It dates from 1505. The open porch is Brancovenian style, the monastery has strenghtened fortress wall, and the church linden wood made is Byzantian style. Here houses 3.000 tomes in Roumanian, Slavonic and Ancient Greek, books, psalm books, a collection of icons on panel and glass ( 650 pieces from 18th and 19th ceturies).

The Romanian site is an munificent universe, where the achitectonical styles from Occident encounters the oriental influence with the specific elements of the traditional culture. In Romania there are over 50 casles, palaces and fortresses charged with a powerful history and culture.
