It was originally a Hellenistic tomb containing a sarcophagus with a large Byzantine cross cut in relief on the lid. St. Eftychios was buried in the sarcophagus. Most probably the chapel was originally painted. Only some traces of frescoes, the steps, the recesses on the walls and a very tiny bema are currently preserved.
