Fresco from the Byzantine church of Arakas The Venetian rule (1489-1571 A.D.) was for the Cypriots worse than the Frankish. The Venetians faced Cyprus as a colony and tried to exploit the island’s resources by imposing heavy taxes, while the socioeconomic regime did not change from the previous period. The Venetians were conscious of the forthcoming Turkish invasion and hurriedly constructed the Nicosia and Famagusta walls. In the case of Nicosia, the walls were smaller in circumference than the pre-existing Lusignan ones, with 11 bastions and three gates. Currently, the walls of Nicosia and the gates, particularly Famagusta Gate, constitute

BRIEF HISTORICAL SURVEY OF CYPRUS Though no paleolithic settlements have, so far, been unearthed in Cyprus, nevertheless the Neolithic period (8200 – 3900 B.C.) is adequately represented. The main neolithic settlements unearthed in Choirokoitia and Kalavasos (Tenta) (Larnaka district), revealed circular huts with corridors in between, inhabited by early Cypriots, mainly engaged in farming, animal raising and hunting. A similar settlement at Gkreko (Famagusta), located by the coast, most probably witnesses its dependence on fishing. Other neolithic settlements were unearthed at Petra tou Limniti and Kataliontas in Nicosia district and at Frenaros in the Famagusta district, while at the locality

In the years following Independence and up to the Turkish invasion, Pafos continued to be a relatively small town, offering limited services and featuring a limited number of tourists and visitors. However, after 1974, Pafos enjoyed an unprecedented tourist activity following the construction of numerous hotels. Tourist-related industries (restaurants, souvenir shops, night clubs, etc) also enjoyed significant upswing. Upon the completion of the Pafos Irrigation Scheme, the irrigation of a sizeable coastal area surrounding Pafos was made possible, contributing to the agricultural development of the hinterland. Industry, albeit of limited economic potential, contributed to the sudden economic development of Pafos.

The Tombs of the Kings The Tombs of the Kings or the Palaiokastra (Old Castles), as also known, lie to the north-west of ancient Pafos. The site was the necropolis (cemetery) of Pafos with hundreds of underground rock-hewn tombs. Though there is no relation with kings, it is possible that eminent Ptolemies, living in Pafos, might have been buried in the tombs. Crosses and some mural paintings indicate that in early Christian times the tombs acted as refuge of the Christians. The tombs which date back to the 3rd century B.C. are reached by steps and have open peristyle courts
