It runs much of the length of the Adirondack Park, from Northville to Lake Placid, with just a few road crossingstraversing one of the wildest regions in the East. The trail steers between mountains and is generally quite easy, with just a few sizable hills and occasional rough spots.

CATS KILL PARK Second only to the Adirondack Park in size and importance, New York’s Catskill Park encompasses a scenic mountain region in the southeastern part of the state. Public lands within the park comprise the Catskill Forest Preserve. A number of wilderness areas here protect much of the wildest and most beautiful scenery. Highest is 4,180-foot Slide Mountain. Superb views are available from mountaintops, open ledges, and clearings. Many valleys consist of private

BEST AREAS FOR WILDERNESS CAMPING ADIRONDACK PARK 2,400,000 acres of state-owned land (6,000,000 acres including private lands). Dominating the upper part of New York State, this enormous and spectacular state park is the largest park of any kind in the United States outside of Alaska. There’s more wilderness here than any location east of the Mississippi. The publicly-owned portion of the park has been designated the Adirondack Forest Preserve, and these lands are permanently protected and will remain forever wild. Private landholdings inside the park are subject to possible development, however. The Preserve has a number of designated wilderness areas
