The road continues alongside the railway on a narrow causeway and along the Punkaharju ridge (7 km (4Jr miles) long, up to 25 m (80 ft) high: nature reserve). The ridge, deposited by the melt-waters of the last Ice Age, falls steeply down on both sides and is covered with pine, larch and birch forest, with a number of attractive footpaths. Here are the docks where the fishing boats moor when they come in with their catches in the morning (interesting fish market). On the SE side of the square is a statue (by John Borjeson, 1883) of the writer Ludvig Holberg (b. 1 684 in Bergen, d. 1 754 in Copenhagen), creator of the Danish-Norwegian comedy.
