By 1920, Illinois ranked eighth in the country in terms of the size of its Mexican population.32 The migration into Illinois occurred in three distinct phases. The first phase occurred in 1906-1910, and it was associated with the recruitment of Mexicans by the railroad companies already employing Mexicans in the Southwest.
