The most intense moment of my life was when our 84 wedding guests were given instruments and started jumping up and down, banging drums and blowing into conch shells. Everyone stood, shoeless, in a circle on the beach with Dave and me in the center and Charlie and Maria, two Maya shamans, presiding. I will forever remember walking around that circle, looking into the happy eyes of each person.
Our story began seven years earlier, when Dave was looking for an apartment in LA and signed a lease with a few of my friends. We started dating long after; our fi rst date was in London while on separate work trips. Over the years, we bonded over a shared love of travel, and while on a trip to Fiji, he proposed. We chose to get married at La Zebra in Tulum after visiting on vacation; to me, it was heaven on earth anything but commercial or usual. Annette Kerslake of Simply Natural Events planned everything.

Most of the guests arrived ahead of our Sunday wedding date to go snorkeling and clif jumping into freshwater cenotes. At 3 p.m. on 12-13-14, Dave and I became one during the most spiritual ceremony I’d ever experienced, complete with Maya rituals and the reciting of our own vows. The reception, under the hotel’s large palapa, followed; it went long into the night as we danced to the tunes of DJ Joel Marcus. Dave and I snuck away just before midnight while our friends relaxed for hours on the beach, waiting for the sunrise.”
