Covington is an unincorporated community located in Kenton County, Kentucky, United States. It is located on the east bank of the Ohio River, opposite Cincinnati, Ohio. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,569. In 1792, George Rogers Clark founded a fort on the site of present-day Covington. The community was founded in 1819 and named for General James Winchester Covington (1781-1862), who served in both the American Revolutionary War and in Mexico–American War.

History of Covington

\sn\snCovington was founded in 1798 by General James Wilkinson. It was originally called “Wilkinson’s Post”. General Wilkinson named the town after his friend and fellow general, Lord Frederick Cavendish. The town was named for a British nobleman who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Covington quickly grew as a strategic military outpost due to its location on the Ohio River and its strategic importance during the American Civil War.

Today, Covington is a thriving small town with a rich history. The downtown district features many historic buildings and murals, including one of General James Wilkinson’s original residences.
