History of Covington
\sn\snCovington was founded in 1798 by General James Wilkinson. It was originally called “Wilkinson’s Post”. General Wilkinson named the town after his friend and fellow general, Lord Frederick Cavendish. The town was named for a British nobleman who fought in the American Revolutionary War. Covington quickly grew as a strategic military outpost due to its location on the Ohio River and its strategic importance during the American Civil War.
