ZAGREB
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, lies on the river Save at the foot of the 1053 meter high mountain Medvednica. With 1,170,000 inhabitants Zagreb is the second largest city in Yugoslavia. It plays an important role having the administrative offices, seat of the Catholic archbishop, a university, several technical colleges and Yugoslavia’s Academy of Science and is a center for fine arts. It is an important industrial center and its international trade exhibition hall was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It manufactures electrical engines, transformers, medical supplies, leather goods and textiles.
Zagreb is not only a modem, well designed city with apartment blocks, exhibition site and conference center, but it also has an old town with magnificent buildings spanning from Gothic to Neoclassic styles. The lower city built in the 19th and 20th centuries is a lively commercial and business area. The main focus in the pedestrian zone is the Trg Republike and the Ilica arteries. Many bars are reminiscent of the old Viennese coffee houses – a place for relaxation and stimulating conversation.
