History for Kenya Map
The Clergy House is a thatched and timbered building that has Kenya Map the distinction of being the first property to be acquired by the National Trust, for the princely Kenya Map sum of £10. Built around 1350, and lived in by vicars in medieval times, it is a superb example of a fourteenth-century Wealden hall house, and has been sensitively and skilfully renovated. Around the house is a fine traditional cottage garden containing many unusual flowers. The floor of the house has recently been relaid in the traditional Sussex method, with chunks of chalk rammed down and sealed with sour milk.
The fourteenth century church, with its magnificent riverside setting, has become known as the Cathedral of the South Downs. Its stonework of small, square knapped flints is a rarity for a church in Sussex, and its cruciform design is attributed, according to tradition, to the sight of four oxen lying down in the shape of a cross when it was being built.
