CHIPPEWA NATIONAL FOREST
This National Forest in north-central Minnesota has a number of rivers, large areas of wetlands, and over 700 lakes, some with sandy beaches.
There are rolling hills with forests of pine, including several virgin stands, along with cedar, spruce, and aspen. White-tailed deer, black bear, timber wolf, coyote, and bald eagle are among the wildlife.
Activities: Chippewa has more than 200 miles of trails for hiking and backpacking, including 68 miles of the North Country Trail (see entry page 184). Difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. Some trails are suitable for cross-country skiing in winter.
Canoeing is possible on a number of rivers and lakes, including 165 miles of the Big Fork River, and a 120-mile loop which involves some large lakes and rivers. Fishing is also widely available. Hunting is permitted in season.
Cam ping Regulations: There are numerous established primitive campsites in the forest. Camping and campfires are also allowed almost anywhere else, except near public recreation areas or where otherwise prohibited. No permits are required.
