Minnesota has 56 state forests, which add up to 3,200,000 acres of land. These are multiple-use areas which are open to logging, but they are also available for recreational use.
The activities possible on these lands include hiking, backpacking, canoeing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, biking, fishing, and hunting. Some of the forests have trail systems, and many of the trails are multiuse.
While state forest literature does not mention or promote camping at other than campgrounds, backpack and primitive camping as well as campfires are generally allowed in the forests, except where posted otherwise.
