APPALACHIAN TRAIL

274 miles in Maine (2,100 total). The Maine portion of the famous Appalachian Trail offers some outstanding backpacking.

It enters Maine through the extremely rugged Mahoosuc Range, which provides one of the most difficult sections of the entire trail.

After crossing mountainous western Maine, the trail leads through much easier terrain, passing numerous wild lakes and ponds, and also following some rivers and streams. The trail ends on top of spectacular Mount Katahdin, in Baxter State Park, after a long and steep climb.

Trail difficulty in Maine ranges between easy and extremely strenuous. Backpacking in the western part of the state should only be undertaken by those who are extremely fit and ready for a considerable physical challenge.

Camping Regulations: Camping along the Appalachian Trail in this state is restricted to established campsites and lean-tos, which are spaced every few miles along the trail. No permits are necessary. Campfires are allowed in built fireplaces, which are located at most campsites.
