MESDA has a collection of Southern decorative art that dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Collectors and antiques dealers Frank Horton and Theodosia Taliaferro founded the museum in 1965 to promote appreciation and awareness of decorative arts made in the South. The exhibits range from textiles, paintings, and ceramics to furniture and silver. Knowledgeable docents lead guided tours to explain the importance of the museum exhibits.

Old Salem is the heart of the historic Moravian settlement that dates back to 1766.

Cutting forests for fuel, clearing land for farming, and livestock grazing have all taken a huge toll on the country’s plant and animal life. So drastic has the destruction of natural flora and fauna been that it is difficult to know what conditions were actually like before the arrival of humans. It is estimated that 98 percent of the original forest cover has been destroyed. Most of the loss has been for fuel used in cookstoves in energy-poor Haiti.
