OKEFENOKEE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

396,000 acres. This National Wildlife Refuge protects an amazingly vast wilderness swamp in southeast Georgia, near and alongside the Florida border. Most of the refuge (some 354,000 acres) consists of designated wilderness.

Okefenokee has many lakes, marshes, and islands. Much of the area is cypress-forested. There’s an abundant bird population, and wildlife includes black bear, deer, and alligator.

Activities: Canoeing is the main activity here, with canoes and camping equipment available for rental nearby. There are also over four miles of hiking trails. Fishing is permitted, but swimming is not.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed for canoeists only. A permit is necessary, with a fee charged to camp each night. Maximum stay is five days. Numbers of visitors are strictly limited. Reservations must be made in advance by phone. Camping is restricted to designated sites, which generally include a large wooden platform. Fires are prohibited at some campsites.
