The Republic of Sierra Leone is a landlocked country in West Africa. It is bordered by Guinea to the north, Liberia to the east and south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The country has a total area of 102,098 square kilometers and a population of about 7 million people. The capital city is Freetown. The official languages are English and Krio.

History of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone, located on the west coast of Africa, is one of the newest countries in the world. The first humans to inhabit the area were probably from Mali. The Kono people are believed to be the first inhabitants of Sierra Leone. The Portuguese arrived in 1505 and claimed the area for Portugal. Sierra Leone became a British colony in 1807. The British left in 1961, and the country became an independent member state of the United Nations in 1961.

In 1991 Sierra Leone was plunged into a civil war that lasted 14 years and killed over 100,000 people. The war was finally resolved in 2002 and a new government was formed. Today Sierra Leone is a very peaceful country with a population of about 6 million.

The capital city, Freetown, is located on the east coast of Sierra Leone. Other major cities include Kenema and Makeni. Sierra Leone is subdivided into four provinces: Western Province, Eastern Province, Northern Province, and Southern Province. Each province has its own government and parliament.

The climate in Sierra Leone is tropical with a dry season from November to April and a wet season from May to October. The average temperature is about 84 degrees Fahrenheit during the dry season and about 81 degrees Fahrenheit during the rainy season. The rainy season lasts from May to October, but the best time to travel is February through April when the rains are over and temperatures are milder.

The world’s largest diamond mine, originally known as Letseng Mine, has been operating in Sierra Leone since 1967. This mine produces more than half of Sierra Leone’s total exports of diamonds, making it the country’s major economic asset. As of 2004, it had produced more than 1 million carats of diamonds.
