The Coryton (Official No.148303) was a steel-hulled 4,553-ton British steam cargo ship measuring 121.13 m in length, with a 16.15-m beam and a 7.49-m draught. William Gray and Co. Ltd, West Hartlepool built and completed her as Yard No.1009 in September 1928; she was launched on 2 August 1928 for Sir James Herbert Cory, Bart. at Cardiff. The single bronze screw was powered by a 423-nhp, three-cylinder triple expansion steam engine that used three single-ended boilers working at a pressure of 180 psi, with nine furnaces and giving 10 knots.
