Situated in Barrio Mag¼eyes, Ponce, Hacienda Buena Vista is one of Puerto Rico’s biggest coffee plantations. The hacienda was established by Salvador de Vives more than 150 years ago, showcasing coffee as one of the top agricultural crops grown in the island. The hacienda features a two-storey manor, quarters for slaves and a coffee mill. While Hacienda Buena Vista provides a glimpse to the haciendero lifestyle in Puerto Rico more than a century ago, its most striking feature is the waterwheel that runs the plantation’s machinery in milling coffee. Hacienda Buena Vista was acquired by the Conversation Trust of Puerto Rico in 1987 and has been restored since then. Tourists can book guided tours around Hacienda Buena Vista in advance for a fee where they can learn more about the traditional coffee-making process in Puerto Rico.
