Here’s A List of Things to do if you Find Yourself in Del Mar

Ah, the beautiful coastal city. Del Mar is as picturesque as picturesque comes. Situated in northern San Diego County, California, the city’s name literally translates to “of the sea” or “by the sea”. The name reflect its location on the Pacific Ocean’s coast. The city has a total geographical area of 4.7 square kilometers (meaning it’s really small).

The local climate is considered to be “Mediterranean subtropical” as the weather is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, humid winters, making it one of the most desirable and sought after climates in the whole of the continental united states.

Population wise as well, the city is also minuscule, with only 4,161 people calling the city home as at the most current census. It is a serene, cozy town with great people and lots of things to do (as we will explore later in this article).

Getting around in the city involves mostly the bus and small, independently run taxi services. There is also the Amtrak station that serves both intra and inter-city transit (as I experienced it).

Visit Free Flight

Free Flight bird sanctuary is an exotic bird sanctuary in Del Mar and is open to the public all 7 days of the week. The sanctuary hosts a collection of beautiful birds on display (with a focus on Parrots) and there, they nurture and re-socialize the birds (after which most of them usually get adopted by various families). The sanctuary also organizes educational programs for both adults and children in addition to field trips and other community events, where they could learn more about avian wildlife.

Visit Del Mar Beach

How do you visit a beach city without visiting the beach? Exactly, you Del Mar beach is a perfect specimen : beautiful white sand, clean blue waters and perfect weather all summer. You couldn’t possibly ask for more, I certainly didn’t. The beach is especially great for sunbathing and surfing because of its usually clear skies and high, thrashing currents.

It also helps that there’s usually very attractive people either getting their tan on, frolicking or just hanging out there almost all through the summer and when you add that, you have a perfect recipe for what a beach is supposed to be.

Visit the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club

Although the State of Kentucky and the East Coast of the United States are most traditionally associated with major American horse racing, Del Mar is home to one of the country’s most prestigious horse racing venues. In 2017, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will be hosting the world-famous Breeders’ Cup Championships for the 1st time.

During this 2-day event, racing fans will enjoy the Southern California the trifecta of vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and sunny days. With over $28m in prize money on the line, horse racing professionals andspectators from around the globe will descend on Del Mar to compete in North America’s unofficial end-of-year horse racing championship event.

This year, perhaps more than any other, a visit to this coastal city might nprove rewarding beyond your wildest imaginations, it certainly did to me.
