She had one deck, four bulkheads cemented, a 40-ton (113.26-cubic.m) forecastle, a 12-ton (33.98-cubic.m) bridge deck, a 109-ton (308.65-cubic.m) quarterdeck, a 39-ton (110.43-cubic.m) poop deck and a 68-ton (192.55-cubic. m) house deck. The Kriegsmarine U-boat U19, commanded by Kapitanleutnant Joachim Schepke Rittterkreuz torpedoed and sank the Pluto in Kriegsmarine quadrant AN5186 on 23 January 1940. The Pluto had sailed from Bergen as part of the 38-ship convoy HN.8 (Norwegian waters – Methil) and arrived at Methil on 22 January 1940. She then left Methil in ballast at midnight and was travelling south independently for Middlesbrough, although there were about twenty other vessels travelling south and unescorted not far away from her near the Farne Islands. On 24 January 1940, Captain G. Thomas of Baltanglia stated in an interview: We sailed from Methil bound to the Tyne on 3 January (this should probably be the 23rd) with a general cargo of 1930 tons. Radio telephone was fitted and the ship was unarmed. The colour of my hull superstructure was grey. We were flying no ensign at the time of the explosion and our confidential blogs were all thrown over the side in a weighted canvas bag.
