SOUTH MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

10,000 acres. This long and narrow state park is on 40-mile-long South Mountain in west-central Maryland. Elevations are up to 2,000 feet. The park runs the entire length of the mountain in this state. Fine views are available from the ridge.

Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on the Appalachian Trail (see entry page 170), which traverses the park.

Camping Regulations: Camping is restricted to shelters along the Appalachian Trail and also a backpackers’ camping area. No permits are required.

In addition, 5,700-acre Catoctin Mountain Park, administered by the National Park Service, has two backcountry trail shelters available. A permit is required, with advance reservations not available.
