ITASCA STATE PARK
32,000 acres. This hilly state park in northwest Minnesota protects the headwaters of the Mississippi River. There are a number of small lakes, ponds, and creeks, plus large Lake Itasca.
The park includes a 2,000-acre wilderness area, with virgin forest of white and red pine, and also meadows and bogs. Deer, bear, coyote, and bald eagle are among the wildlife.
Activities: Hiking and backpacking are possible on about 33 miles of trails. There’s also a long bike trail. Canoeing is available on Lake Itasca. Canoes and bikes may be rented.
Camping Regulations: A permit is required for backpack camping, and may be obtained from park headquarters. Camping is limited to several designated sites, where campfires are allowed.
