KIOWA NATIONAL GRASSLAND

Administered by Cibola National Forest, this National Grassland consists of two separate units in northeast New Mexico. Elevations are around 5,000 feet. Several thousand head of livestock are allowed to graze here.

Included are rolling prairie grasslands, plus 800-foot deep Canadian River Canyon, along with the Canadian River. Among the area’s widlife are antelope, bear, mule deer, coyote, and fox.

Activities: Hiking, backpacking, and horseback riding are permitted throughout the Grassland. The only established trail is a 3-mile section of the Santa Fe National Historic Trail.

Travel on foot or by horse is also possible on old roads, paths, or cross-country. Fishing is available along the Canadian River. Hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed without restriction in most parts of the National Grassland, except where posted otherwise. No permits or fees are required.
