In May 1913 the 113-ton steam trawler Scottish Prince, built in 1899 by Eltringham at Stone Quay, was also wrecked on the Goldstone. And there were many more. The top of the Goldstone is mostly bare rock with a few strands of seaweed clinging to it, while the seaward, eastern part is a high, gradually-sloping reef covered in kelp and tangleweed. The western side, however, is a sheer face to 10 metres and absolutely covered in bunches of beautiful large plumose anemones. The seabed slopes steeply down to the west and south, levelling out at about 15-18 metres, and the bottom here is one big scrapyard of wreckage, where ships over the last two centuries seemed to have simply piled on top of each other. The tidal stream is very strong on the western end and over the reef top, but there is adequate shelter on the north and south sides of the Goldstone, depending on which way the tide is running. The site is best dived at low slack water on neap tides when the rock is showing above the surface. On springs there is very little slack water time and it is best avoided due to the ferocity of the tidal run. The site is very exposed, with very little passing traffic, and it is a long haul from either Beadnell or Seahouses so extra care should be taken. This is a lovely dive, where anything could turn up.
