Olbia is an ancient town that has been continuously inhabited since pre-Roman times. It was first mentioned in 948 AD by the Byzantine historian John Malalas. In Roman times, Olbia was known as Olbia Prima and was a major port on the Amalfi Coast. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Olbia became a possession of the Ostrogothic Kingdom and later of the Byzantine Empire. It passed into Lombard hands in 753 AD and finally to the Crown of Aragon in 1202 AD.
Although it has seen many changes over the centuries, Olbia retains much of its ancient character today. The main street running through the town is lined with narrow lanes and charming stone houses. There are also many churches and monasteries in Olbia, including Santa Maria Assunta Church.
