ORIENTATION AND PRACTICAL INFORMATION

Just a few kilometers from the German border, Salzburg covers both banks of the Salzach River. Two hills abut the river: the Mdnchsberg over the Altstadt (old city) on the south side and the Kapuzinerberg by the Neustadt (new city) on the north side. The Hauptbahnhof is on the northern side of town beyond the Neustadt; buses #1, 5,6, 51, and 55 connect it to downtown. On foot, turn left out of the station onto Rainerstr. and follow it straight under the tunnel and on to Mirabellpl.

Tourist Office, Mozartpl. 5 (88 98 73 30), in the Altstadt. From the station, take bus #5, 6, 51, or 55 to Mozartsteg, head away from the river and curve right around the building into Mozartpl. The office gives free hotel maps, guided tours of the city (daily 12:15pm, 8), and sells the Salzburg Card, which grants admission to all museums and sights as well as unlimited public transportation (24hr. card 19; 48hr. 27; 72hr. 33). Currency Exchange: Banks offer better rates for cash than AmEx offices but often charge higher commissions. Banking hours M-F 8am-12:30pm and 2-4:30pm. The train sta tion’s exchange is open M-F 8:30am-5pm, Sa 8:30am-2:30pm.

American Express: Mozartpl. 5 (80 80). Provides all banking services; no commission on AmEx checks. Holds mail and books tours. Open M-F 9am-5:30pm, Sa 9am-noon.

Luggage Storage: At the train station. 24hr. lockers 2-3.50.

Bi-Gay-Lesbian Resources: Homosexual Initiative of Salzburg (HOSI), Mullner Haupt- str. 11 (s43 59 27), hosts regular workshops and meetings, and offers a list of bars available upon request at the tourist office.

Pharmacies: Elisabeth-Apotheke, Elisabethstr. la (87 14 84). Pharmacies in the city center open M-F 8am-6pm, Sa 8am-noon. There are always 3 pharmacies open for emergencies; check the list on the door of any closed pharmacy.

Internet Access: Internet Cafe, Mozartpl. 5 (84 48 22), near the tourist office. 0.15 per min. Open Sept.-June daily 9am-10pm, July-Aug. 9am-midnight. Piterfun Inter- netc@fe, Ferdinand-Porsche-Str. 7, across from the train station, has a rave ambience. 15min. 1.80, 30min. 2.90, 60min. 5. Open daily lOam-lOpm.
