There has been an enormous amount of digging into the concretion, leaving holes of more than a metre deep, and literally piles of cannon balls and bar shot have been taken in the last 25 years. The wrecksite is on the south side of Gun Rocks in 7-10 metres, but you really have to look hard to find the rusting concretion Looking down into Kittiwake Gully under the thick covering of kelp. Even the remaining cannons are not as obvious as you might expect because they lie half-buried, with some even concreted into the surrounding rocks. The first time I visited the site in the early 1970s, I swam right over them, and at the time the guns were all over the place. The site is fairly sheltered on the bottom half of the flood tide, but the current is exceptionally strong away from the rocks in the Sound. This is an excellent colourful dive, where lots of anemones and soft corals cover the steep boulder-strewn sides of the reef. Even the stony seabed out in the Sound at around 13 metres is brightly lit up, with lots of life about. Tidal streams are very strong on this side of Gun Rocks and it is really a slack water dive; the visibility is also usually excellent. The boulders on the reef edge often hide a few crustaceans too, adding a bonus to the site. This side of the reef is rather more sheltered from the strong currents but it always appears gloomier.
