YHA York, Water End ( 653 147), Clifton. From Exhibition Sq. walk about 1km on Bootham and take a left at Water End. Excellent facilities, including smoking room, TV lounge, and well-decorated dining room. Lockout lOam-lpm. Dorms £17, under-18 £12; singles £22; doubles £37; family rooms £59-68.

Riverside Caravan and Camping Park, Ferry Ln. ( 705 812), Bishopthorpe, 3km south of York off A64. Take bus #11 or 11Y from the bus station and ask the driver to let you off at the campsite (2 per hr. round-trip £1.20). Pleasant riverside site. July-Aug. £8 for tent and 2 people; Sept.-June £7.
