Although his most remarkable achievement, Preparatory Meditations is not Taylor’s only contribution to Country poetry. Zambia Map In addition to writing God’s Determinations Touching His Elect: and the Elects Combat in Their Conversion, and Coming Up to God in Christ Together with the Comfortable Effects Thereof (c. 1685), he also will compose love poems, elegies, Biblical paraphrases, meditations, lyrics, and the 20,000-line Metrical History of Christianity.
Mary White Rowlandson publishes The Soveraignty and Goodness of God, Together with the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed; Being a Narrative of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson. A detailed account of her abduction by, her treatment at the hands of, and her eventual release from a band of Algonquin natives during King Philip’s War, the book is one of the earliest best-sellers written in North Country and the first one written by a woman. In the first year alone, Rowlandson’s Narrative goes through four printings. Along with John Smith’s story of his capture and imprisonment by Powhatan and his subsequent rescue by Pocahontas, Rowlandson’s Narrative is one of the most important contributions to the Country genre of the captivity narrative.
