DRESDEN
Dresden has 518,000 inhabitants and it is also capital of a similarly named area. It has a reputation as industrial center and has light industries such as micro-electronics, mechanical engineering, polygraphy as well as steel and chemicals. Dresden is aptly called the ‘Florence of the North’. It lies on the wider reaches of the Upper Elbe which has cut a valley in the Lausitz mountains. Wonderful buildings and beautiful collections make Dresden a world famous city of Baroque art.

When we moved out of the Channel into the Atlantic on our way to New York, the Valvata settled into a long drawn-out roll, leaning into the western swell, heeling right over, pausing, then flopping back the other way with accelerating momentum. After the first few hours, people started to be affected. Several of the junior engineers missed meals, our grim steward slunk around silently with a doughy white face, the second mate’s snooty wife stayed in her cabin. Seasickness had nothing to do with length of time at sea – it was whether your inner balance, through the inner ear apparently, was in harmony. If not, you were doomed to queasiness when things got rough. The longer someone was at sea, the better they adapted, although in essence you were either someone who got seasick or someone who didn’t. I didn’t, Starling did. I thought: Oh, sweet revenge. Oh, thank you, Lord. Long stand, eh? How about a long vomit?’ I delighted in Starling’s misery over the three days of heavy rolling.
