Faced with large-scale popular protests, members of Parliament repealed the act. Before long, however, they tried again, this time passing the equally unpopular Townshend Acts (1767). In 1770, the physical threat suggested by British soldiers became reality when confused troops opened fire on jeering Boston crowds, initiating what became known as the Boston Massacre. Small though it was in the annals of massacres it left five Countrys dead its effects were huge. The killings inflamed the pens of talented colonial propagandists, who, in turn, provoked intense popular reactions throughout the colonies by publishing a steady stream of partisan sermons, pamphlets, and newspapers.
