MAJOR BACKPACKING TRAILS OF NEW HAMPSHIRE

APPALACHIAN TRAIL

This important National Scenic Trail enters New Hampshire from Vermont at Hanover. It winds through White Mountain National Forest, crossing the Presidential and Franconia Ranges, the two highest mountain ranges in the state, and then traverses the less lofty but incredibly rugged Mahoosuc Range at the Maine border.

The scenery throughout this state is magnificent, and the views are some of the finest to be found along the entire Appalachian Trail. The difficulty of the entire New Hampshire portion should not be underestimated, however. Much of the time it’s extremely rough and strenuous.

Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are allowed along the trail at a number of lean-tos and other designated campsites. No permits are necessary.

Within White Mountain National Forest (see entry page 204) camping is also allowed elsewhere along the trail, except in Restricted Use Areas, or within one-quarter mile of roads or facilities. Campsites should also be at least 200 feet from water sources and the trail.
