CATS KILL PARK

Second only to the Adirondack Park in size and importance, New York’s Catskill Park encompasses a scenic mountain region in the southeastern part of the state.

Public lands within the park comprise the Catskill Forest Preserve. A number of wilderness areas here protect much of the wildest and most beautiful scenery. Motor vehicles are prohibited and other uses restricted within these areas.

Virtually all of the park’s terrain is mountainous, with 34 peaks over 3,500 feet elevation. Highest is 4,180-foot Slide Mountain. Superb views are available from mountaintops, open ledges, and clearings. Many valleys consist of private lands.

A large number of streams are found here, and most of the region is hardwood-forested, with spruce and fir at higher elevations. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, coyote, bobcat, and fox.

Activities; There are over 200 miles of trails for backpacking and hiking. Difficulty varies from easy to very strenuous, with a majority of trails on the challenging side. A couple of trails are designated for horseback riding.

Cross-country skiing is a winter option on just a handful of the easier trails. Snowshoeing is possible on other trails. Fishing is available along some streams and at the few lakes. Hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed on Forest Preserve lands within the park, except where posted otherwise. A number of lean-tos and other designated campsites are available.

When camping at other than a lean-to or established area, campsites must be at least 150 feet water sources, trails, and roads. Campfires are allowed, but bringing a stove is suggested.

No permits are required, except for groups of 10 or more, or to camp for more than three nights at one site. Camping is prohibited above 3,500 foot elevation from March 22-December 20 each year.
