SAVANNAH PORTAGE STATE PARK
15,818 acres. This state park in east-central Minnesota preserves a historic 6-mile portage route between the West and East Savannah Rivers, connecting two important watersheds. It’s an area of hills, some large bogs, and a number of lakes, with wildlife which includes deer, bear, moose, coyote, and wolf.
Activities: There are 22 miles of easy to moderate trails for hiking and backpacking. Sixteen miles of trails are used for cross-country skiing in winter, and 10 miles are open to mountain biking. Canoeing is possible on the rivers and lakes, and canoes may be rented. Fishing is available along two of the lakes.
Camping Regulations: The park has six backpack camping areas. Primitive camping is restricted to these designated sites.
