Currently under construction, this major new National Scenic Trail will eventually extend some 3,200 miles from New York to North Dakota. The Minnesota section will be about 375 miles long.
The trail here is mostly easy. It runs for 68 miles through Chippewa National Forest, and also several of Minnesota’s state parks and forests, plus the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. En route it passes a number of beautiful lakes and crosses some rivers. The Chippewa National Forest segment and a few other portions have been completed and are open for backpacking.
Camping Regulations: Where the trail is on National Forest or state forest lands, camping and campfires are allowed almost anywhere, except where posted otherwise. No permits are necessary.
It’s suggested that campsites be chosen which are well off the trail and away from water sources. On state park and other lands, camping is restricted to designated sites.
