GULF ISLANDS NATIONAL SEASHORE
137,598 acres. Located both in Mississippi and Florida, this National Seashore consists of several beautiful barrier islands about 10 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, plus areas on the mainland. The islands are accessible only by charter boat.
There are lovely sandy beaches here, along with marshes and pine forests. Horn and Petit Bois Islands are designated wilderness areas. Alligators are among the wildlife, and there are many nesting birds including the Great Blue Heron.
Activities: Beach hiking is an option on 14-mile Horn Island and the other islands. Fishing is permitted, but hunting is not.
Cam ping Regulations: Camping is allowed on Horn and Petit Bois Islands, as well as on East Ship Island. No permits are necessary. Dune areas I are off limits to camping. Water must be carried in. Campfires may be built on beach areas only.
