BEST AREAS FOR WILDERNESS CAMPING

CIMARRON NATIONAL GRASSLAND

Located in the southwest corner of Kansas and administered by the National Forest Service, Cimarron National Grassland is the largest area of public land in the state.

It’s an area of prairie grasslands, with some major stands of trees, several small ponds, and the Cimarron Riverwhich is dry most of the time except after heavy rainfall.

The National Grassland is open to grazing and has several thousand head of cattle. Some areas are fenced in. Wildlife elsewhere includes whitetailed and mule deer, elk, coyote, prairie dog, pheasant, and wild turkey.

Activities: Several hiking trails run along the Cimarron River, and a 23-mile section of the Sante Fe National Historic Trail traverses part of the Grassland. Hiking and backpacking are also possible on old roads, or one may travel cross-country. Limited fishing is available, and hunting is permitted in season.

Camping Regulations: Camping is allowed throughout the region, except near public use areas or where posted otherwise. No permits are necessary. Campers are encouraged to visit the main office or to phone before starting out. Water is scarce in most parts of the Grassland.
