OSCEOLA NATIONAL FOREST
Located in northeast Florida, Osceola National Forest has cypress and gum swamps, stands of pine, small ponds, and a large lake. There’s one designated wilderness area, the 13,600-acre Big Gum Swamp Wilderness. Wildlife includes whitetailed deer, black bear, wild turkey, and alligator.
Activities: The single marked trail here for backpacking and hiking is the 39-mile Osceola Trail, which is now part of the Florida Trail (see entry page 132). Canoeing is available on one river. Fishing is possible, and hunting is permitted in season.
Camping Regulations: Camping and campfires are allowed throughout the region, except near day use areas or where posted otherwise. No permits are necessary. All camping during deer hunting season must be at designated sites.
