DOM ST. JAKOB AUSTRIA
The unassuming gray facade of the Dom St. Jakob conceals a riot of pink-and-white High Baroque ornamentation within. Trompe I’oeil ceiling murals depict the life of St James. The cathedral’s prized possession is the small altar painting of Our Lady of Succor by Lukas Cranach the Elder. (1 block behind the Goldenes Dachl. Open Apr.-Sept. daily 7:30am-7:30pm; Oct.-Mar. 8am-6:30pm. Free.)
HOFBURG AUSTRIA
The imperial palace was built in 1460 but completely remodeled under Maria Theresia. Imposing furniture, large portraits, and elaborate chandeliers fill the rooms. Don’t miss the gilded Augusta Family tableau in the Audience Room, depicting the whole Habsburg gang in gold medallions. (Behind the Dom St. Jakob. Open daily 9am-5pm. English guidebook 1.80. 5.45, students 3.65.)
