Known to the locals as the new California, Newquay (pop. 30,000) is an incongruous slice of surfer culture in the middle of Cornwall. Winds descend on Rstral Beach with a vengeance, creating what some consider the best surfing conditions in Europe. The enticing Lusty Glaze Beach beckons from the bay side. 5 per day, £4.30). From Par, trains connect to Plymouth (lhr. 15 per day, £6.80) and Penzance (2hr. 12 per day, £9.10). First (a (0870) 608 2608) buses arrive from St. Ives (2l4hr. 4 per day, £4.50).
