ACCOMMODATIONS

Rooms are scarce in Cambridge, which makes prices high and quality low. Most B&Bs aren’t in the town center; those around Portugal Street and Tenison Road are often open only in July and August. Check the list at the tourist office, or pick up their guide to accommodations (50p).

Warkworth Guest House, Warkworth Terr. (363 682). Elegantly decorated old home with sunny, ensuite rooms. Near the bus station for those who wish to skip the walk to the city center. Packed lunch on request. Singles £40; doubles from £60. O Tenison Towers Guest House, 148 Tenison Rd. (566 511). Fresh flowers grace airy rooms in this welcoming house 2 blocks from the train station. Proprietress Mrs. Chance keeps an impeccable house, and her breakfast includes homemade bread and marmalade. Singles £20-25; doubles £40-50.

YHA Cambridge, 97 Tenison Rd. (354 601), offers a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Rock music pervades their well-equipped kitchen and lounge. Bureau de change. Breakfast £3.50. Laundry facilities. Internet 50p per 7min. In summer, reserve several weeks ahead. Dorms £16, under-18 £12.

Home from Home B&B, 78 Milton Rd. ( 323 555). A 20min. walk from the city center. Rooms are spotless and well-stocked with biscuits, cocoa, and mini-toiletries. Singles £35-40; doubles £50-60; apartments with kitchens and lounge £350 per week. Regency Guest House, 7 Regent Terr. ( 329 626), a 5min. walk from the city center. Regency offers bright, spacious rooms, many of which overlook the park outside. Singles £48; doubles £68.

Highfield Farm Camping Park, Long Rd. ( 262 308), Comberton. Head west on A603 (4.5km), then right on the B1046 to Comberton (1.5km), or take Cambus #102 or 103 from the Drummer St. bus station to Westfield Rd. (every 45min.). Open Mar.-Oct. Call ahead. £4-5 per person with tent.
