Reserve B&Bs and hostels in advance, especially in August. If rooms are booked in Glasgow, consider staying at the SYHA Loch Lomond (252). Most B&Bs cluster on Argyle Street in the university area or on Westercraigs Road, east of the Necropolis.

Glasgow Euro Hostel, (222 2828; www.euro-hostels.com), on the corner of Clyde St. and Jamaica St. Convenient to the city centre, this hostel also offers a dining room and bar. Breakfast included. Laundry facilities. Internet access. Dorms from £13.80.

Merchant Lodge, 52 Virginia St. (552 2424). Originally a tobacco store, this upscale B&B is convenient and comfortable. Singles £35; doubles £55; triples £70.

University of Glasgow, No. 3 The Square, Conference & Visitor Services ( 330 5385).

Enter the university from University St. and turn right into the square. Summer housing at several dorms. Office open M-F 9am-5pm. Student dorms £14; B&B £17.50.

Alamo Guest House, 46 Gray St. ( 339 2395), across from Kelvingrove Park at its southern exit. Beautiful location in the West End. Singles £23; doubles £40-46.

McLay’s Guest House, 268 Renfrew St. ( 332 4796). With 3 dining rooms and satellite TV, this posh B&B looks and feels more like a hotel. Singles £24, with bath £26; doubles £4048; family room £5565.
