San Francisco Alcatraz Map

It’s a beautiful day. We’re on our way to Alcatraz. It’s a place I’ve heard about since I was a little kid but I’ve never actually seen it in person. So we’re taking the ferry over there and we’re headed there now. We’re about to land on the island. We’re right outside Alcatraz prison and it’s pretty stunning. There are just these gorgeous colorful flowers, seagulls in nesting, you’re surrounded by nature, and it’s a crazy contrast from inside. If I was a prisoner here, this would have been my cell. Even my apartment in New York was bigger than this.

You have your toilet right there, sink, a bed, no room to walk around and the average prisoners stayed here for about nine years. Behind me is the control room where all the communication in Alcatraz took place.

We’re now in the D Block of the prison, which is the luxury area of Alcatraz, and you can pretty much park your car in here. When the Spanish explorers first came to Alcatraz, it was inhabited by pelicans, and that’s actually how it got its name. Alcatraz means “pelican.” Besides being home to one of the most famous prisons in the world, it’s also home to one of the oldest lighthouses in the United States.

I can’t imagine being a prisoner in Alcatraz because every single day you’re surrounded by these beautiful views of San Francisco including the Golden Gate Bridge, and you’re stuck on the rock.
