LUOHU DONGMEN FOOD STREET SHENZHEN
This is where real Shenzheners, particularly the young go to have their cheap eats. On a Saturday night the street is a sea of spikey Korean boy-band haircuts and bare midriffs as the young look for mates and generally have fun. And when you’ve bought out all the T-shirts with unreadable English names and made your mobile phone flash like a Christmas tree, it’s time to eat.
You can get just about anything here from the usual Cantonese delicacies through Thai food we’ve ALL been to Thailand and even some pretty good scatterings of western food. Shenzhen’s German residents swear by the West Windsor Grill Restaurant 0755 8230 4100 on the fourth floor of the East Gate Mall, which serves German and Austrian delicacies. And we couldn’t write about Dong Men restaurants without mentioning Ding Tai Feng 0755 8230 7588. This is the Shenzhen branch of the famous Taipei restaurant. Our misspent youth taught us that lots of people claim to be able to cook jiaozi, the wonderful tasty northern Chinese meat pastries, but nobody does it like the Taiwanese, and Ding Tai Feng is the number one Taiwanese jiaozi chain. Its Taipei branch was named in Time magazine as one of the top ten restaurants in the world.
