The type of marine life on the bottom makes it one of those areas where the water just seems to stagnate, as it must be by-passed by the main tidal flow. Roughly a third of the way along Farne Island, on the north side, is a deep V-shaped fissure, known locally as Assy Hole, although its proper name is St. Cuthbert’s Gut. Names like that make me wonder if St. Cuthbert and all the other monks in medieval times would have used the Gut for their ablutions. (Have a nice dive!). I believe that the tower and accommodation were appropriately built next to the Gut for easy access, due to its shape and size, as well as because it is constantly washed out in a northerly swell. The shallow bottom is strewn with the rubbish from the nearby house’ but there is nothing of any value. Moving west from the Gut, depths are shallow and a small smooth wall to the seabed leads all the way along to the Churn Gut at the western end, but there is nothing of interest. Twenty metres north and out from the wall, the seabed slopes away down to 14 metres onto a stony uninteresting bottom.
