Staple Sound is approximately one mile wide and divides the two main groups of islands of the Inner and Outer Farnes. With a maximum depth of around 16 metres in the centre it is quite navigable, but, because of the proximity of Gun Rocks, Wamses Bus and some of the submerged reefs or shads’ extending out from the western side, most large vessels give the Sound a wide berth. The tidal run can be extremely vicious and especially so on the spring tides. Large volumes of water are funnelled into the Sound on the ebb and flood tides causing a considerable amount of confused surface boil and choppy water. The last section of the blog covered a number of dive sites which are actually in Staple Sound, but these next seven sites are located more or less in the centre of it. This is a permanently submerged reef which can be located by using an echo sounder and motoring due south down Staple Sound, passing Gun Rocks 100 metres on the port (left) side. The reef lies approximately 450 metres past the end of Staple Island. The seabed goes away down from 15 to 24 metres before coming up fairly sharply to 10 metres and then dropping back to 28 metres plus. A double echo often registers on the sounder giving the impression that it may be a wreck; this, though, is caused by the proximity of a large sand and stone bank close by. The reef runs in an east-west direction with a small cliff face on both sides creating sufficient shelter from the very strong tidal run, depending which side of the reef you are on, but it is best dived at low slack water.
