The Museum features exhibits in art. history and science. Its Art Department, founded in 1916 as the Oakland Art Gallery, houses a comprehensive California regional collection. Major artists represented m the gallery include Ansel Adams. John Baldessari, Albert Bierstadt, Anne Brigman.

Deborah Butterfield, Robert Colescott, Lia Cook, Imogen Cunningham, Maynard Dixon, John Graham, Thomas Hill, Mildred Howard, Robert Hudson. Margo Humphrey, Alvin Light, Marvin Lipofsky, Xavier Martinez, Michael C. McMillen, Eadweard Muybridge, Manuel Neri, Lucy Puls,Betye Saar. Raymond Saunders, Wayne Thiebaud, Edward Weston and Peter Voulkos. The Department also mounts temporary exhibitions, often in collaboration with other museums. Among the Oakland Museums most impressive collections are the Dorothea Lange Archive; the Arthur and Lucia Mathews Collection of Arts and Crafts furniture and paintings; architectural photographs by Roger Sturtevant; Bay Area figurative art by such renown artists as Elmer Bischoff. Nathan Oliveira. David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Brown. James Weeks, and others; and California landscapes, including paintings by the Society of Six. The museum is respected for its craft collection of contemporary jewelry, fiber, glass, wood, metal and ceramics. The Art Department continues to be active in the acquisition and exhibition of art in all media.
